IPOKRaTES expands its excellent international educational programs to Ghana
“Akwaaba!”— A Ghanaian expression translated in English to “You are most welcome” initiated the IPOKRaTES Foundation Neonatology Scientific Conference held in Accra from November 27 to December 1, 2017. The spirit of “Akwaaba” and outstanding Ghanaian hospitality and warmth permeated during the entire conference for over 100 attendees primarily from West African countries as well as speakers from the US, Australia, the UK, and Ghana.
One week prior to the main conference, Dr. Bobbi Byrne from the Indiana University in the US brought a team of six experts in simulation education that included respiratory therapists, neonatologists and nurses. They worked closely with a group of African doctors who already have or are in the process of initiating neonatal simulation programs in their own hospitals.
The main program included a broad array of lectures related to neonatal care. Although the lectures were very informative, the discussions were outstanding because they engendered a focus on what was specifically important and specific for the patients cared for by the attendees. Pictures from the conference are seen below.
I would like to give special thanks to the host, Dr. Christabel Enweronu-Laryea, whose herculean efforts made this conference possible. I would also like to thank the sponsors as well as the World Health Organization, who provided excellent support. We are already in the early stages of planning the next general IPOKRaTES neonatal conference in West Africa and have been discussing seminars in Pediatric Cardiology and Neonatal Nursing. In addition, several collaborative research projects as well as individual dialogues pertaining to clinical patient care have been initiated because of this conference.
